* The film is based on the occasion in 1980 when Chief Minister M.G Ramachandran brought a boxing star, Muhammad Ali, to Chennai to raise funds for the Amateur Boxing Association in Tamil Nadu.
The film Sarpatta Parambarai tells the story of Kapilan, a young Dalit man living in the port city of Madras in the 1970s. Despite his love for boxing, Kapilan's mother forbids him from participating in the sport due to the fear that he will suffer the same fate as his father, Muniratnam, who was killed in a boxing match. However, Kapilan's dreams are supported by Kevin, a friend of his father's.
During this time, India is in the midst of a state of emergency that lasted for 18 months. In this political climate, the Sarpatta Sports Club, representing Kapilan, finds itself in competition with the Idiyappam Sports Club. The Sarpatta team is represented by Meeran, who unfortunately loses to the Idiyappam team's boxer, Wembley.
After the match, there is an exchange of words between the two teams, leading the coaches of each team, Rangan of the Sarpatta team and Duraikannan of the Idiyappam team, to place a bet. The bet states that if the Sarpatta team loses the next match, Rangan will retire from coaching.
