Chhapa Kaata (2023) English Subtitle - A Light-Hearted Family Drama with a Nostalgic Punch

Chhapa Kata (2023) is a Marathi-language comedy-drama that brings together a talented ensemble cast, led by Makarand Anaspure, Mohan Joshi, and Tejaswini Lonari. Directed by Sandeep Navre and produced under Ultra Media & Entertainment, the film plays out like a nostalgic family coin toss — landing somewhere between heartfelt storytelling and overcooked melodrama.

The story revolves around Namdev (Namya), played by Anaspure, who navigates the complexities of familial expectations, generational gaps, and budding romance. Supporting characters like Shanaya, her quirky grandfather, and Namya’s overbearing family members all add flavor to the small-town drama that unfolds with both humor and emotional moments.

While the premise offers a refreshing blend of tradition versus modernity, the execution occasionally leans too heavily on melodrama. Kalpeshraj Kubal of Maharashtra Times rightly points out the film delivers a silver-screen experience that's a bit too theatrical compared to recent grounded Marathi films. The background score by Mukul Kashikar and music by Gaurav Chati are functional, but not standout. The song “Man He Guntale” by Sunidhi Chauhan and the title track sung by Adarsh Shinde add melodic appeal but don’t linger long after the credits roll.

From a technical standpoint, the film is a mixed bag. Cinematography by Gaurav Ponkshe captures the rustic charm of Maharashtra, while the editing by Minal Mhadnak feels a bit slack at times, particularly in the second act. However, the runtime of 134 minutes doesn’t overstay its welcome, thanks to engaging performances from the ensemble.

Despite its critical shortcomings, Chhapa Kata offers a wholesome family watch with familiar Marathi flavors. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but delivers enough emotional payoff for a weekend watch. The film is currently streaming on Ultra Jhakass OTT platform, and is also listed on Prime Video with an IMDb rating of 7.8/10.
