Gentlewoman (2025) English Subtitle - Subtle Feminist Cinema Done Right
Gentlewoman, directed and written by Joshua Sethuraman, is a grounded and emotionally potent Tamil-language film that explores themes of female identity, betrayal, and resilience. Released on 7 March 2025, the movie stars Lijomol Jose as Poorni and Losliya Mariyanesan as Anna, two women bound by fate through the disappearance of a man they both believed they knew.
The story kicks off with the mysterious vanishing of Poorni’s husband, Aravind (Hari Krishnan), which sends shockwaves through her life. As the investigation unfolds, Poorni is confronted with a painful truth—Aravind had an affair with Anna, one of his clients. What begins as a missing person’s case soon transforms into an emotional collision between two women, each betrayed in different ways, yet both caught in the same web of lies, societal expectations, and emotional upheaval.
Gentlewoman avoids melodrama and instead opts for a slow-burn, character-driven narrative. Lijomol’s portrayal of Poorni is deeply moving—she embodies quiet strength, confusion, and dignity. Losliya delivers one of her most mature performances as Anna, refusing to be boxed into the "other woman" trope and instead revealing a layered, vulnerable character.
Director Sethuraman crafts a delicate yet intense atmosphere, aided beautifully by Govind Vasantha’s hauntingly memorable soundtrack. The songs “Sulunthee” and “Aasai Nayagi” add emotional texture without overwhelming the story. Sa Kathavarayan’s cinematography paints everyday spaces with a sense of intimacy and quiet tension, while Elayaraja Sekar’s editing keeps the story tightly focused on its protagonists.
The film doesn’t rely on dramatic plot twists but instead leans into emotional realism. Through Poorni and Anna’s evolving dynamic—sometimes hostile, sometimes painfully understanding—Gentlewoman highlights the emotional labor women are forced to perform in silence and the quiet power in reclaiming one’s voice.
In a landscape of thrillers and loud dramas, Gentlewoman stands out as a subtle yet powerful feminist narrative. It’s not just a film about betrayal—it’s about what comes after, and how women navigate a world that often demands their silence.
