Guardian (2024) English Subtitle - Revenge Ghost with a Tired Twist

Guardian (2024) is a Tamil-language horror film that attempts to blend psychological trauma and supernatural revenge, but ends up recycling genre clichés without enough emotional depth or fresh scares. Directed by Sabari and Guru Saravanan, and released on March 8, 2024, the film stars Hansika Motwani as the tormented protagonist Aparna, alongside Suresh Chandra Menon and Sriman.

The story revolves around Aparna, who starts experiencing eerie events after a traumatic incident. As her mental state deteriorates, she begins to unravel the ghostly mysteries surrounding her. While the film tries to build a psychological horror base, it quickly descends into predictable revenge tropes involving a restless spirit with unfinished business.

Hansika delivers a committed performance, trying her best to ground the narrative emotionally. However, the weak screenplay and uninspired direction hamper any attempt at creating tension. The supporting cast, including Suresh Chandra Menon, Sriman, and child actor Baby Krishita, provide some balance, but their characters lack depth and presence.

Technically, the film is polished. Sam C.S. delivers a moody soundtrack with standout tracks like “Mayakitta” and “Thiraikadal”, though they don’t do much to elevate the horror. Cinematography by K. A. Sakthivel is decent, but the visual style doesn't break any new ground.

Critical reception has been largely negative. Cinema Express gave it a 1/5, criticizing the bland jumpscares and tired plot. The Times of India also found it dull, calling it “an insipid film.” However, Times Now offered a slightly more generous 3/5, suggesting it’s a one-time watch for horror fans.

With its revenge-driven ghost plot, Guardian fails to bring anything new to Tamil horror cinema. The scares are few and far between, and when they do arrive, they’re more unintentionally funny than frightening. Still, for fans of Hansika or casual viewers looking for a basic horror watch, it may be mildly entertaining.
