Kingston (2025) English Subtitle - Supernatural Adventure or Sinking Ship?
Kingston (2025), also known as Kingston and the Cursed Sea, is a Tamil-language fantasy horror adventure directed by debutant Kamal Prakash and led by G.V. Prakash Kumar, who also produced the film. While the premise brims with potential—a cursed sea, coastal legends, and a conflicted hero—the execution struggles to rise above the waves.
Set in the coastal village of Thoovathur, the story follows Kingston, a local handyman entangled in a smuggling ring. Believing he’s transporting sea cucumbers, Kingston discovers the darker truth—he’s being used to smuggle drugs by the sinister Thomas (Sabumon Abdusamad). Determined to redeem himself and uncover the secrets of the haunted sea, Kingston embarks on a perilous voyage that reveals long-buried curses and chilling mysteries from the past.
Despite its intriguing setup and folklore-inspired backdrop, the film suffers from inconsistent pacing and underwhelming visual effects. The cinematography by Gokul Benoy tries to capture the eerie vastness of the sea, but often falls short due to limited production value. San Lokesh's editing keeps the narrative mostly coherent, though the horror elements feel diluted and lack emotional weight.
Divyabharathi as Rose provides a solid supporting performance, but the script doesn’t allow for much depth. GV Prakash’s portrayal of Kingston is sincere, but the writing doesn’t give him enough scope to shine. The flashbacks to 1982, involving the origin of the curse, are intriguing but underdeveloped, leaving viewers wanting more from the supernatural angle.
Musically, GV Prakash offers a competent background score, but none of the tracks stand out as memorable. The film touches upon themes of betrayal, guilt, and redemption, yet it never fully explores them, choosing spectacle over substance.
Released in theatres on March 7, 2025, and later on Zee5 (April 13, 2025) in Tamil and Telugu, Kingston has received mixed reviews, with IMDb rating it 4.4/10. While the premise holds promise, the execution leaves much to be desired, making it a film that floats on ideas but sinks in delivery.
