Kummattikali (2025) English Subtitle - A Soulful Story Set in a Coastal Backdrop
Kummattikali (2024), directed by Vincent Selva, is a vibrant Malayalam-language drama that paints a richly layered picture of identity, folklore, and community. Set against the backdrop of Kerala's traditional Kummattikali festival, the film captures the charm and chaos of coastal life through the intertwined stories of four young men.
The film follows Bhairavan (Rashik Ajmal), Dennis (Madhav Suresh), Luka (Mithun Prakash), and Ameer (Dhananjay Premjith) as they navigate personal conflicts, social expectations, and secrets hidden behind the masks of the festival. Their lives take a drastic turn when a crime linked to the Kummattikali celebrations shakes their close-knit village. What begins as a celebration slowly unravels into a gripping tale of suspicion and survival.
Vincent Selva’s direction delicately balances folklore and modern storytelling, bringing out emotional depth through symbolism. The screenplay by Ramesh Ammanath and Selva grounds the film in authenticity while subtly integrating mystery. The characters are flawed yet relatable, particularly Rashik Ajmal’s Bhairavan, who shoulders much of the film’s emotional weight with quiet intensity.
Dinesh Alleppey, Satheesh Devika, and Maria (Devika Satish) deliver compelling supporting performances. The ensemble cast, including Lenaa as Indira, Mime Gopi, Anu Prabhakar, and Major Ravi, adds depth to the village's social fabric, showing how the festive mask often hides personal pain and unresolved pasts.
Visually, Kummattikali is striking. The cinematography captures the colors and rituals of the festival with great beauty. The production design immerses viewers in Kerala’s coastal landscape, and the background score subtly builds tension as the mystery deepens.
At 2 hours and 9 minutes, the film does test patience in the second act but regains momentum with a satisfying final reveal. Kummattikali isn't just a festival—here, it's a metaphor for the masks we wear in society. This layered narrative, combined with rich visuals and strong performances, makes the film a must-watch for lovers of culturally rooted dramas.
