Mad Square (stylized as MAD²), the 2025 sequel to the cult favorite Mad (2023), is a chaotic blend of action, comedy, and mystery, wrapped in wild college energy and absurd adventures. Directed by Kalyan Shankar, the film brings back the original's quirky spirit, amped up with new stakes and unexpected twists.

The story kicks off with Ganesh "Laddu" (Vishnu Oi) in jail, narrating his bizarre tale to six curious students. What follows is a flashback frenzy—from weddings gone wrong to heists, beach vacations, abductions, and mental hospital chases. The boys—Ashok (Narne Nithiin), DD (Sangeeth Sobhan), Manoj (Ram Nitin), and Shiva—land themselves in a web of mistaken identity and stolen jewelry, with a dangerous gangster Maxx (Sunil) hot on their trail.

The Goa segment, which should be a break from the chaos, only dives deeper into it, culminating in a police chase, fake identities, and finally, the reveal that Ashok is an undercover IPS officer, flipping the film's genre into spy-thriller territory. The comic timing and absurdity keep it entertaining, especially thanks to Bheems Ceciroleo’s peppy soundtrack and Thaman S’s energetic score.

The ensemble cast performs well, with Ram Nitin and Sangeeth Sobhan delivering solid humor. Priyanka Jawalkar adds spark as Laila, while Sunil’s villainous Maxx brings menace with a twist of fun. A cameo by K.V. Anudeep and a humorous detour involving a mental hospital are standout moments.

Though Mad Square occasionally feels overcrowded and over-the-top, its self-aware tone and unpredictability keep the viewer guessing. The non-linear storytelling and gags land well, especially for fans of the first movie.

With a runtime of 127 minutes and a box office pull of ₹66 crore, Mad Square is a commercial entertainer that doesn't take itself too seriously. It’s a film where madness is the method, and that's exactly what fans came for.
