Painkili (2025) English Subtitle - A Lighthearted Love Tale with a Twist
Painkili (transl. Parrot), released on Valentine’s Day 2025, is a Malayalam romantic comedy that blends humor with emotion in an unexpectedly charming package. Directed by Sreejith Babu in his debut and written by Jithu Madhavan, this film follows the quirky journey of Suku Sujithkumar, a small-time hustler who pretends to be mentally unstable to escape the grip of the law—but ends up falling genuinely in love.
Sajin Gopu delivers a standout performance as Suku, carrying the film with an earnest mix of mischief and innocence. His chemistry with Anaswara Rajan, who plays Sheeba, is sweet and believable, adding depth to an otherwise eccentric premise. The supporting cast, including Roshan Shanavas as Paachan and Chandu Salimkumar as the hilarious Aneesh (Kunjayi), brings consistent laughs and emotional beats throughout.
The film’s tone is light-hearted, but it manages to subtly address issues like identity, deception, and redemption. Director Sreejith Babu shows promise with his balanced handling of humor and sentiment. The writing by Jithu Madhavan—also a co-producer alongside actor Fahadh Faasil—injects a good dose of clever dialogue and cultural flavor into this offbeat rom-com.
The technical aspects shine too. Arjun Sethu’s cinematography captures vibrant frames of Kerala’s small-town life, while Kiran Das’s crisp editing ensures the pace doesn’t lag. The music by Justin Varghese fits the film’s whimsical tone, especially in emotional and romantic moments.
While Painkili doesn’t reinvent the genre, it offers enough freshness to feel worthwhile. The humor sometimes dips into slapstick, and not all subplots land smoothly, which may explain the mixed-to-positive critical reception. Still, it managed to win over a good portion of the audience, evident from the 86% Google user approval despite a modest IMDb rating of 5.9.
In short, Painkili is a feel-good romantic comedy with a heart, quirky characters, and a sincere message. It’s not perfect, but it’s a pleasant ride with lovable leads, making it a suitable Valentine’s Day watch for Malayalam cinema fans.
