Tebusan Dosa (2024) English Subtitle - Mystery Horror From Yogyakarta
Redemption of Sin (Tebusan Dosa) is a slow-burning Indonesian mystery horror film that explores themes of motherhood, guilt, and spirituality through a culturally rich yet unsettling narrative. Directed by Yosep Anggi Noen and co-written with Alim Sudio, the film stars Happy Salma, Putri Marino, and Shogen, and premiered in Indonesian cinemas on October 17, 2024.
The story follows Wening (Happy Salma), a grieving mother searching for her missing daughter. She’s joined by Tirta (Putri Marino), a mysterious podcaster who investigates horror legends, and Tetsuya (Shogen), a Japanese researcher delving into local myths. What starts as a desperate search turns into a haunting journey through supernatural realms, ancient rituals, and buried traumas in rural Yogyakarta.
The film’s strength lies in its eerie atmosphere, elevated by Teoh Gay Hian’s haunting cinematography and a moody, minimal score from Yudhi Arfani and Zeke Khaseli. The backdrop of Javanese culture—temples, chants, mysticism—blends with psychological horror, slowly unraveling truths hidden beneath Wening’s seemingly righteous path.
Happy Salma delivers a raw, intense performance that earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 2025 Film Pilihan Tempo Awards. Meanwhile, Putri Marino’s cryptic role adds emotional weight and mystery, making her Best Supporting Actress nomination well deserved. Shogen, the Japanese actor, brings an international flavor, enriching the film’s cross-cultural theme, particularly as the narrative touches on spiritual parallels between East Asian and Southeast Asian beliefs.
Despite a strong premise, the film divides viewers. With a 5.8/10 IMDb rating, it appeals more to art-house fans than casual horror lovers. Its slow pace, abstract symbolism, and limited scares might alienate mainstream audiences expecting jumpscares. However, for fans of atmospheric horror and culturally grounded storytelling, Redemption of Sin offers a fresh and layered narrative.
Co-produced by Palari Films, Legacy Pictures, and South Korea’s Showbox, this is a fine example of Asian film collaboration, where horror is not just about ghosts but emotional reckoning.
